Newport Life magazine gave William Heydt a full profile in its March/April 2022 issue. The subject was Working Newport, his book of watercolors of the people who keep the city running: more than 400 locals, from a fisherman who waved him off at first and then asked for a second portrait, to a bookbinder, a stone carver and the crew of a tall ship.

“A lot of the people are characters.”William Heydt, Newport Life

Heydt paints every morning from about five until half past nine, working in watercolor from photographs he composes first. He keeps the originals and sells prints. Here, those paintings travel onto things you can wear and use.

The story also traces how a Newport native took these paintings to the screen with Newport, RI: The Series.

Working Newport

William Heydt spent years painting the people who keep Newport running: the locksmith, the fish dealers, the firefighters at Station One, the captain at the wheel. Each portrait is bold, detailed watercolor, and each one is a neighbor at work.

The same paintings, and the same hand, are behind everything in the Newportant Apparel shop.
