It started with a gallery night. William Heydt was showing his “Newportant People” watercolors, and the people who were in the paintings were standing in the room.
As I talked with them, the paintings seemed to get bolder. The colors got louder and every face picked up a personality. Later I kept thinking about each character: what they were like in person, where they lived, what went on around their kitchen tables.
That idea became Newport, RI: The Series. Every painting got its own scripted episode, shot in Newport, with William’s landscapes woven through the story and short interviews with the real people at the end.
You can watch the episodes on The Series page, and wear the paintings in the shop. More stories from the set are coming here.
